So... What's the Deal with the Jana Show Anyway?
My real life, minus the résumé voice. ← 😂
Psst… I need to share a secret… come closer… a little closer… closer still… There we go. Now scoot in so we are comfy close.
First, to clear the air… If I see a bunny, you can bet your bubbly butters, I’m going to squeal in delight as though this bunny is the actual first bunny I’ve ever seen IRL. Every. Time. Without. Fail.
Second, to rip off the Band-Aid… When I first started building my Substack, I thought I needed to show up as the polished version of myself.
The expert, with all the answers. The one who has everything figured out.
Then reality, as it often does, raised its little hand and gave me a little love tap straight across the face. OUCH!
I needed to be reminded that polished was never really the point. There are a thousand places to find answers. What I kept searching for, and thus created, was a place to sit with the questions.
Apparently, my brain decided those questions belonged at the intersection of neuroscience, spirituality, childhood, systems, poetry, grief, delight, and whatever else my Random Jan ( alter ego) decides to bring to the dinner table.
Honestly... this tracks.
My curiosity has never been particularly interested in keeping things in neat little categories. In fact, it sees a thread over here, a pattern over there, and before I know it, those ideas are having a full-on conversation over tea and crumpets. Delicious… except for the tea part… I prefer coffee.
I tend to notice patterns, relationships, and the thing underneath the thing. I stay with something long enough to notice what might be organizing it before deciding what it means.
I’m fascinated with what’s underneath the behaviors we so quickly judge.
I suppose this is where I should probably stop trying to make this sound respectable. I’m not here to be polished. I’m here to be real.
And the real Jana?
Well... she’s a hoot-and-a-hay-day of fun.
If you’ve ever heard me speak, you’ve probably heard me say, “Welcome to the Jana Show!” I usually follow that by telling people I went into education because I figured it would be easier than Hollywood.
Turns out... I did find my stage. And apparently, I brought my own spotlight.
Around here, you’ll probably run into a few Janaisms, the occasional appearance of Random Jan, and more than a few moments where I connect things that probably shouldn’t make sense... until somehow they do.
I’ve stopped trying to keep those parts of myself in separate rooms. They’re much happier swapping stories over the same table while sipping soul soup with lifted pinky fingers. In fact, if you ever snuck into my house, there’s a good chance you’d find my hands weaving threads flying around like Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, pulling everything together while making a glorious mess.
Random Jan confession... I can lose an embarrassing amount of time wondering why one sentence lands in someone’s heart while another one doesn’t.
This is apparently how I prefer to spend my free time.
Poetry has always felt like another language I speak. I just love when words bump into each other and topple sideways into organized stanzas.
Give me an ordinary Tuesday, an impossible question, a song lyric, a moon phase, and someone to wonder out loud...
...and before long, the Jana Show has officially begun.
Personally, I think that’s a pretty good way to spend our time together.
